With modern city living, we often miss the view homes with a garden and even a garden room can provide. It is very relaxing to see natural plants in our daily views. Although there are many ways plants can be brought into the home, sometimes it is just not tactical to do so. In these instances, a wonderful display can be created using an external window box or two. These boxes can simply provide the needed natural look that we all love. Window boxes give an opportunity to grow a variety of plants. You will find success with flowers, fruit, veg and herbs, all without the need for a garden.

Choosing And Preparing Window Boxes

Window boxes need not be purpose-made, finding alternatives gives a good opportunity to upcycle unwanted items. Packing cases can be utilised, but make sure if you intend to consume produce grown in the boxes that they are free from wood preservatives and fungicides that could pose health issues in the future. If you choose to use softwood, periodic checks should be made on the boxes security, softwood does not last forever and will slowly biodegrade.
Whatever containers you choose, they should be free draining. This can be achieved by drilling holes in the bottom of the boxes at regular intervals.
Window boxes contain a fixed amount of compost so as the plants grow they will consume the nutrients it contains. Adding a few pellets of slow-release plant food will ensure the plants have plenty of nutrients to support lush healthy plant growth. Watering a window box can be tricky so adding a handful of water-retaining gel to the compost will help ensure the plants always have adequate moisture.
