Is It Time To Upgrade Your Outdoor Lighting? – With lighter nights and mornings on the horizon, outdoor lighting might not be your top priority. However, with summer around the corner, outdoor lighting becomes a priority again. Whilst you won’t need lighting for fumbling in your purse or pocket for keys when you come home from work, some snazzy outdoor lighting can transform your garden for warm evenings.

Outdoor lighting can be as fancy, functional, or as pretty as you want it to be. If you want to make a real feature of your lighting though it’s best to opt for decorative lighting and banish the boring security lights.

Whilst security lights have their place and a purpose, they are often uncompromisingly bright! So what sort of upgrade can you make to your outdoor lighting to set the right mood for drinks on the patio or evening BBQs?

There are several key areas where you can add additional light to your garden, some obvious options and some more unusual choices.

When designing your outdoor lighting scheme, it may seem silly but think of it the same as you would an indoor living space. The most effective way to use light is to layer it. In a home you would typically have a ceiling light for an overall ambient light, and then maybe wall lights or lamps for accents or to highlight certain features. Well, you can do the same in your garden too!

For your overall ambient light, you could use a wall-mounted light – mounted above the door that leads to your garden for example. If you have a particularly wide garden, buy a double spotlight so you can aim the light in two opposite directions.

For some more mellow layered lighting, wall lights can also be used on fences. This is ideal if you have a long garden, and your main light doesn’t reach to the bottom.

You can also buy fence post lights – these fit on top of posts and look very effective when multiples are used, down each side of your garden, for example.

There are various types of spotlights you can buy that go in the ground too. These can either be cemented into patios and walkways, or you can buy ones that you just stick into the soil. These can be used as uplights to highlight trees and plants.

Another unique way to lighten your garden is to use bollard-style lamp posts. These work most effectively when you have a garden path, and they can be used on either side to ‘light the way’.

As mentioned, none of these lights need to be ugly either – there are so many decorative styles you can buy for outside now. From modern industrial style to lovely replica Victorian-style lamps. Pick a style to complement the type of property you live in, classical styles for older properties, for example.

Finally, the last layer of lighting in your garden could include non–electric style light. Small solar light, for example, particularly fairy light style. The finishing touch? Candles! Candles work brilliantly to create a nice atmosphere if you’re having guests over.
