Creating a Spa Bathroom: How to Make Your Bathroom Like a Spa Retreat

Creating a Spa Bathroom – n these days of everything being a click away and a desire for things immediately, we often forget that at times, the best moments are those we allow to slowly envelop us. Think of the last book you read, think of the garden you tend to, and think of that bath you let yourself slowly sink into. All three of these things take time, and ultimately, we feel all the better for them taking a while to give us the desired effect. Enjoy them too quickly, and that feeling of relaxation, enjoyment or pleasure is either gone in an instant or never appears at all!

We may not know what books you like to read, or whether you like to demonstrate your green-fingered abilities, but we can remain confident that a nice relaxing bath after a hard day’s work, a tiresome day out, or a gruelling workout always makes you feel better.

Creating a Spa Bathroom

With that in mind, we’ve put together some of the best ideas for how you can convert your bathroom into a spa-like retreat where it is just you, the water, and the relaxation (plus a few furnishings to complement the style!)

Converting your bathroom into a spa retreat with several easy changes….and one that’s a little trickier!

There are lots of options you could investigate if you truly want to make your bathroom into an idyllic spa retreat. Some could set you back a lot of cash; others may not even cost you a penny. Some might require a little hard work; others might just rely on you putting something in a different place from where it was before. Let’s get started.

Declutter the bathroom

Perhaps the first thing to do is declutter. Clear down those surfaces of excess bottles, sprays, flannels and more. Keep things simple and look at how items could be stored in cabinets, drawers, or baskets. Use your counter space for only the essentials. A messy surface is not conducive to a clear mind, and that, after all, is what we are aiming for with a spa-themed bathroom! For storage think of open shelves that can be positioned above the toilet, opposite the sink or under it. Perhaps also consider a towel ladder to give your towel storage a little more style.

Let the colours be calming

Whether it be blinds, flooring, shelving, or even a bin, look for the calming colours that help create a tranquil environment. It would be unwise to pair high contrast colours. Instead, opt for the colours inspired by nature. Think about this with all aspects of the bathroom. Certain shades of blue and green can really enhance this aesthetic and can help you achieve the peaceful aura you were hoping the bathroom would give you. White is also a good option, and combining that with some wooden and metallic features can also help. Think of a white sink with a wooden draw unit, accompanied by chrome handles for example.

Add plush towels

It may sound obvious, but plush towels add not just comfort, but a look of quality too. Cotton or bamboo would be best. They are long-lasting and look good. Use a wooden towel stand to help compliment the spa aesthetic and have any additional towels neatly folded and placed on open shelving below the sink/vanity station.

Add calming scents

It seems almost as obvious as the towels, but pleasant smells in a bathroom can totally transform the feeling it gives. Certain fragrances are incredible for creating a sense of calm and relaxation. Rosemary, lavender, and eucalyptus for example, are all excellent choices to help create a spa-like feel to your bathroom. You can achieve this through reed diffusers, candles, soaps and other bathroom products.

Add soft rugs but don’t ignore the flooring!

Soft rugs are a welcome comfort for your feet when you step out of a warm bath. Not only that, but they also add a splash of colour to a room that may otherwise be quite subtle. The variety to choose from is almost endless, so it will be easy to find something that suits your style. Don’t forget the importance of the actual flooring either though. A luxury vinyl tile floor makes for a perfect bathroom flooring solution for creating a spa-like décor. With marble and wood effects available in subtle tones that accentuate the calming feel of the room, LVT flooring provides durability, low maintenance, and it’s waterproof! With it also being perfect for underfloor heating too, you can further add to the spa effect you are aiming for.

Add some greenery

The addition of some potted plants or small trees can help change the feel of the room. Consider where they are put. We want minimal clutter, but we want a calming influence. Using countertops or even the ceiling for potted plants can be a good option. Remember, to find those that thrive in humid conditions. Should that prove tricky, faux plants and trees can still provide the look you are going for. A fake tree is also a great addition for that random empty corner that you haven’t been able to utilise.

Toiletries upgrade and storage

We may all have our favourite bath and shower products, but you’ll notice any spa you visit has the products all contained in bottles that match the aesthetic of the spa. Your favourite brands may not help you to achieve this. So, either change to other brands that help your items become more aesthetically pleasing or simply decant your existing products into beautifully shaped bottles to add an increased feeling of being in a spa. You could also look to add an amenity station. A tall open set of shelves where each shelf represents a different product set. You’ll feel like you are at the premium local spa as you take your pick of the necessary products from fully stocked shelves!

Install a spa-type shower

Now this is likely to cost a bit more than most of the options we have covered so far, but it could easily be the transformative piece your bathroom needs to turn it into the spa haven you crave.

Spa showers tend to be much larger than what you typically have at home, and rather than a shower curtain, there are glass doors. Spa showers are tiled all over and come with a shower that boasts a huge showerhead. However, you can opt for a regular showerhead if you prefer. Have a shelf cut into the shower so it continues the sense of organisation and tidy lines. If this isn’t possible, or you prefer a bath to a shower, you could look at an inset bath. Concealed in the floor, you soon replicate the look of your local spa.

The above can go some way to giving your bathroom the spa-like feel you want it to have. Of course, you can dive much deeper and spend much more money on achieving this goal. Think marble walls, wet rooms, additional vanity stations and more. Just remember, clean lines, minimal clutter, subtle tones and calming scents and you are halfway there!
