Creating Effective Living Space Within Your Home

The living areas our homes provide us with can often be vastly improved with a few easy changes to its layout and the use of space.  With a fixed amount of physical space within your home, here are some ways of creating effective living space and utilising. This approach could save you the expense of a house move and all the risks involved under our current economic climate.

Storage

Improving your home’s storage can yield valuable living space by releasing floor space. A good example of this is a bedroom with a built-in wardrobe. Many of us have a bedroom cluttered with clothing, even those with built-in wardrobes struggle and often end up with multiple chests of drawers taking up every spare bit of space in our bedrooms. By carefully choosing suitable shelving, hanging rails and a shoe rack, the best use of the space within a built-in wardrobe can be achieved. You know what clothing you need and how often you wear different outfits, so choose the internal layout to work with you and not against you in accommodating your clothing.

This approach works well throughout the house, simple changes like a coffee table with a shelf underneath, or a tall storage unit in preference to a shorter one can give you places to store the things you need without eating into your floor space.

Slimline storage units can be placed in hallways where space permits them without causing an obstruction. This may permit you to remove furniture elsewhere in your home and create living space.

Bring Unused Areas Back To Life

Often our homes have space that we cannot utilise properly. It may be that an area is too dark for any useful purpose, or you have a conservatory and the humidity and temperature variations within it make it unusable as a fully habitable space.

Lighting For Gloomy Areas

When it comes to lighting, often it is as simple as choosing a lamp of greater lumen output. Led technology has in recent years evolved into efficient powerful lighting that can generate plenty of light with low running costs. Where a simple bulb change won’t do, or in stations where there is no light fittings close enough to provide illumination to the area. A choice should be made on either improving the existing lighting with a new, or extended lighting circuit, or if the area is simply to be used for storage it may be possible to use rechargeable semi-portable lighting powered by a battery that doesn’t require a permanent connection to the mains power of your home.

Reclaim Your Concervatory

With a conservatory where temperature and humidity are often so much of a problem that the space remains underutilised, it is very worthwhile to address the poor insulation and turn the area into a wonderful additional living space. Existing conservatories tend to have uninsulated glass or polycarbonate roofs, these types of roof, as installed, do not provide any meaningful insulation for the space. This means that in summer consevatories can reach far higher, and often unbearable temperatures in during the summer. In winter, the situation is even worse, the space they provide can be very cold, inefficient to heat and suffer with extreme humidity and condencation problems. Tackling the problem directly in a quick to acheave long term solution, is best taken care of by a conservatory roof insulation specialist. The work to install a suitable insulated ceiling can usually be completed in a single day and for the modest invested cost, this upgrade to your home represents one of the best value ways to provide additional effective living space for your family.
